The institute was founded by Drs. T.S. Soundaram and G. Ramachandran. The Gandhigram Rural Institute of Higher Education was established in 1956 to continue Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘Nai Talim’ educational system. Under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, it was designated as a Deemed University by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1976. UGC is entirely funding it. Under UGC norms, it was renamed Gandhigram Rural Institute in 2006.

GRI has an anti-ragging committee. Everyday prayer is the must for all the students, and on every Friday there will be a separate prayer for each department. The college has a computer center, and the students can use it with their identity card. There are security guards in every corner of the college to guide the students. The main thing is, the college is near a hill station, and lots of trees surround it.
