The University of Cochin was established in 1971 by an act of the Kerala Assembly in response to a demand for postgraduate education in the state. In February 1986, it was renamed Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). Its objectives are to encourage undergraduate and postgraduate studies, as well as advanced research in applied science, technology, industry, commerce, management, and social sciences.
